Even Installing An Alarm Home Security Is Not Complete

When a homeowner decides to install a home alarm, home security may be improved, but there are other steps that will need taken to offer the best defense against breaches in home safety. For example, areas around the home that are always in the dark or windows covered on the outside by shrubs or trees provide good cover for a burglar attempting to gain entry into the home without being seen. By providing lighting in some of the dark corners and making sure there is nothing for a thief to hide behind, may convince a burglar to move on to another house that offers more hiding places.

Too many times, people have an elaborate alarm system installed and then become complacent about their safety and about the security of their home. Of the millions of homes protected by an alarm, home security was not what it needed to be because in the majority of cases the alarm was not turned on at the time of the break-in. Outdoor lights with burned out bulbs or motion detectors that do not sense motion until the perpetrator is within two feet of the sensor do not work well in providing home security.

There are also many instances in which a homeowner installed their own alarm and without adequately surveying their home and property and failed to protect key entry points of the home. Many alarms are designed to sound only an audible local alarm in the event of a break-in and in many cases the alarms are designed to reset at the end of about a minute or so. This will give a burglar a lot of time to find the siren and disable it before it goes off again. If no one heard the initial alarm, home security is compromised and the owner will lose considerably.

With a professionally installed alarm, home security may be slightly better, especially if the homeowner agrees to a monitoring contract. These alarms have a built-in automatic dialer that will contact a monitoring company, which in turn will contact the appropriate emergency service based on the type of signal that has been sent. The sensors connected to the system can be for break-ins, fire or for medical emergencies and faster response can be achieved by the automatic notification.

Companies offering this service typically require a one or two year contract depending on the type of system installed and any installation issues. Many offers are for a typical house with between six and ten sensors. Additional items can be added at an additional cost not part of the free installation offer. The other advantage is the system will be installed by professionals using a security survey to determine sensor placement.

After installing an alarm, home security can be enhanced by adding additional lighting outdoors, keeping expensive home merchandise out of sight of windows as much as  possible and making sure the alarm is turned on when needed. Keeping the perimeter activated at night while sleeping and the whole house alarm on when no one is going to be at home will provide good protection and security.
