Installing Security Alarms To Protect Your Family

It is every homeowners dream to go through life comfortable in knowing their family is safe and sound from the threat of outside danger. Unfortunately, home break ins continue to increase at an alarming rate and expensive, fancy locks do not always keep unauthorized people out of the home. Security alarms can be used as a deterrent to break ins and provide a larger degree of safety if the home is broken into while the family is home.

The majority of people will choose to have their security surveillance systems installed by a professional service. Many of them offer free equipment and free installation provided the homeowner agrees to a contract for services for automatic dialing systems, which start at about $25 per month. When the cost of the basic system and installation is considered, it is not a bad deal and if anyone attempts to break into the home, the police are notified automatically.

However, there are some that may only want an alarm system that provides an audible local alarm and will install in on their own. Other than making sure all of the wires leading to the control panel are hidden, possibly the most challenging aspect of installing security alarms is figuring out where to place the contacts to detect potential burglars. Many use simple magnetic contacts that attach to the surface of doors and windows sue to their ease of installation while others prefer recessed contacts that are not visible inside or outside the home.

To determine the right places in which to install any contacts for security system, a security survey will have to be made. Start outside the home and think like a burglar. Look at every door and window and find the areas that would be the easiest to gain entry into the house without being detected outdoors. If you come across any windows hidden by trees or shrubs, consider hacking them down to provide more visibility from the street or the neighbor's house.

Once you have found the potential entry points outside, move back into the house and make a map of all floors on the ground level, the most likely level on which burglars with attempt entry. Mark windows that you decided were the most likely to be tried while outdoors. Consider using infrared beams that cross the room from the transmitter to a receiver. If the beam is broken the alarm will sound, but if you have pets in the house the beam will need to be high enough to avoid accidental tripping of the alarm.

There are many different types of contacts available for security systems from simple devices to elaborate alarm systems. Remember, that the more elaborate you choose the more expensive it will be and each separate device you install, unless you are planning to use wireless devices, will have to have wires run through the house to the master alarm panel.

While it may sound complicated to install security alarms, in reality if a do-it-yourself homeowner can install their own telephones or run their own cables for television, they can probably install their own security alarm.
